Relationship building is an important factor in one’s happiness professionally and personally. We all crave to be surrounded by people we like, trust and respect.
Unfortunately, many people find having strong relationships to be difficult. And that’s because such relationships require that we not only find them but develop and nurture them. It takes a lot of time and energy. For some people it is stressful. But the end result is profound and can result in us feeling fulfilled.
Let’s focus for a minute on personal relationships. These types of relationships are valued because of the connection we have with someone. The closeness we feel with friends and family is a basic need. People have a need to be loved, connected and to belong. We spend time with friends and family because it feels good to be with them. It gives us a sense of satisfaction and makes us happy.
As far as professional relationships, we tend to look for people we like and people we feel have a mutual connection with to get us what we want at work and have our best interest at heart. We turn to people at work that we feel can get us ahead in our careers and achieve our goals without causing drama or headaches.
Having relationships requires us to constantly build and nurture them. And it puts us at risk. We risk being hurt, losing our jobs, having our ideas being stolen, being manipulated, being misguided, lied to and so forth. Yet we constantly seek relationships. We yearn and need them. They are a basic human need. Theodore Roosevelt once said, “the most important single ingredient in the formula of success is knowing how to get along with people.”
